Dear Mr. Vitello, the idea of the canonization of Pope Pius and by a former Hitler Youth infuriates me, I am nearly having an epileptic fit, which I've never had before. Pope Pius could have told all Roman Catholics that Hitler was the anti-Christ, and that would have been it, or done a lot. Instead he made all those accords, however if you take a look at Rolf Hochhut' TELL 38, which I happen to have translated, [Little, Brown] you will note that one Swiss Seminarian, Maurice Bavaud, felt that way and might have succeeded had he not felt that he might also kill Himmler and Goebbels. At least as importantly, you will find out there, that Hitler was dreadfully afraid of Catholic opposition to his policies. After the war there then were the "rat lines" by the Catholic Church, the escape routes to South America. The Catholic Churches anti-semitism in certain regions, Croatia and Austria was limitless. I can only hope that the NY Times editorial board will take a stand, no matter a few subscription consequences and that the Magazine have someone do a thorough job on this matter. The Catholic Church in Poland? When it came to godless Communism after WW II, in Eastern Europe - ah look how courageous we could suddenly. The mere idea of canonization of Pacelli being canonized eliminates whatever being sainted might mean. And he's supposed to have flagellated him? Good grief, perhaps he was a pervert to boot.
