MAY 31 POSTING, FREUD, HANDKE + USUAL POLITICAL MISERIS

The time of making tactical concession is upon us, playing the humble bush whacker - we haven't seen this act since the first presidential campaign. and becoming realistic in dealing wit "the street". but it's a real shame that the FBI won't get to look in every congress person's fridge! no wonder we have sudden unanimity on the rotten hill. but let's give them a break: Poor chaps, all need to have a little extra for their re-elections. Even my congressman, "Red" Jim, "Bugdud" McDermott spreads pork rinds evenly to everyone in his district.
With kabul breaking up too, the old amurrican saying "if you break it fix it" occurs to me to suggest to the forever praying jimmy carter and the "realist" brzezinski and some reagan folks who were responsible for creating and arming the mujaheddin with stinger missiles and then abandoning them to all our fate might... at least pray... since all this praying in america seems to achieve so much. End of facile derisiveness for the day.
First a few links to the ongoing Handke-[Bozo]nnet-Comedie-Francaise-HeinePrize Yes+No Double controversy, two skandals that are now bouncing off each other among the nonreading idiots in europe, perhaps it will even acquire a third dimension.
The promised
links to various fine memorializations of Freud's birthday 150 years ago have been posted with the other matters that caught my eye. Especially I liked the William Gass piece in the NY Times. Harold Bloom's was in the Wall Street Journal, hear hear! The London Review piece is first rate too.

I know, we've been distracted of late by talk of massive NSA surveillance of Americans, slipping poll numbers, and the War on Immigration, but let's not lose track of the real kicker: will Bush defy common sense, global opinion, his own advisors, any shred of decency or intelligence, and the interests of the American people by bombing Iran?

Here's the official calculation of the odds as of the beginning of the year—things can only have gotten worse since then.

Spy Agency Watching Americans From Space

WASHINGTON - A little-known spy agency that analyzes imagery taken from the skies has been spending significantly more time watching U.S. soil.

Iran Nuclear Conflict Is About U.S. Dominance
by Gareth Porter

WASHINGTON - As the George W. Bush administration pushes for a showdown over Iran's nuclear programme in the U.N. Security Council, it has presented the issue as a matter of global security -- an Iranian nuclear threat in defiance of the international community. But the history of the conflict and the private strategic thinking of both sides reveal that the dispute is really about the administration's drive for greater dominance in the Middle East and Iran's demand for recognition as a regional power.

It is now known that the Iranian leadership, which was convinced that Bush was planning to move against Iran after toppling Saddam Hussein in Iraq, proposed in April 2003 to negotiate with the United States on the very issues which the administration had claimed were the basis for its hostile posture toward Tehran: its nuclear programme, its support for Hizbollah and other anti-Israeli armed groups and its hostility to Israel's existence.

U.S. Secretly Backing Warlords in Somalia

By Emily Wax and Karen DeYoung
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, May 17, 2006; Page A01

More than a decade after U.S. troops withdrew from Somalia following a disastrous military intervention, officials of Somalia's interim government and some U.S. analysts of Africa policy say the United States has returned to the African country, secretly supporting secular warlords who have been waging fierce battles against Islamic groups for control of the capital, Mogadishu

State Department Looking for a Fight in which it Might get a Black Eye

In yet another blow to the credibility of one of its annually released "certification" reports on the performance of other nations on some broad social or political issue – this time on the degree of cooperation in the anti-terrorism struggle – the State Department in its 2006 compilation included Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, and accused Venezuela of a high degree of non-cooperation. The decades-old and always sketchy evidence involving the Castro regime in alleged terrorist activity has been used to buttress Washington's crusade against Havana. As for the spurious nature of its case against Chávez, this has caused a number of area specialists to dismiss Washington's claims as disgraceful inventions that are totally devoid of substance or integrity.

Iraq's Impending Fracture to Produce Political Earthquake in Turkey
Drafted By: Jephraim P. Gundzik
http://www.pinr.com

Unusual political stability in Turkey faces upheaval from Iraq's impending fracture along sectarian lines. The birth of an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq will end Turkey's E.U. accession hopes. The collapse of the accession process will strongly undermine the legitimacy of the ruling Justice and Development Party (A.K.P.), making it increasingly vulnerable to political attacks from Turkey's secular establishment. These attacks could prompt the disintegration of the Erdogan government as soon as the end of 2006.

On 27 April 2006, the Iranian philosopher Ramin Jahanbegloo experienced what is coming to be commonplace for many Iranian intellectuals and political activists. In Tehran's Mehrabad airport, on his way to India, he heard his name being called out from the loudspeakers. He followed instructions and went to the security department of the airport where he found himself subject to the re-enactment of a frightening scenario.

POSTING FOR MID MAY WITH ALL LINKS AND COMMENTARY

SENDING WITH ALL THE LINKS FOR THE SUMMA POLOLITICO POSTING OF MAY 13/05
http://summapolitico.blogspot.com
featuring Ray McGovern's Buzz Flash Interview
Do not hesitate, if you wish to be off the list; forward if you like.
I am having some difficulty in making the various links "live" on the blog, the guard dogs at the firewalls start to bark at a profusion of htlm tags and links.
From now on I will simply send an alert about new postings in the subject line, and feew if any or no links at all.
Last week's sending about Bonzonet of the Comedie Francaise canceling their production of the great ART OF ASKING continues to make waves, especially in the world whose languages have a Latin inflection; it has now reached the Peruvian blogs and will fall into the South Pacific and be devoured by the rich upswelling of anchovies in the cold waters there this year. What has reached the English speaking world of mis and disinformation on this subject appears solely in a brief piece in The Guardian and Times on Line [ U.K] and the Toronto Globe and Mail. The NY Times ran two brief clips in its art summary section about a week or so ago. You can find a great deal of material and links on my artscritic blog, on the news pages of handke.scriptmania.com and handkeromance.scriptmania.com ; also to Handke's various statements. Amazing amazing amazing the bog of ignorance that the mass information producers produce in the blooming minds of arts reporters en especial and the world at large. So much light producing darkness. There is nothing especially mysterious as to their origin of most of the material that is collected in Summa Polico; herewith the list some with expression of preference for reliability and acumen, but in order of the preponderance of origin, all of which reach me via newsletter on a near daily basis for http://summapolitico.blogspot.com

I see nothing especially tendentious there, they present just "the fact" what the facts speak ....

arrive punctually and I am amused to see that both Tony the Pony and Bush the Whacker are doing the Cabinet Shuffle... at about the same time...

Oh yes, Columbia Journalism Review

too has a newsletter...as does

my impotent friends at what's left of the Trotzkyist Brigade. They see clearly, have nothing to lose by speaking truth to power, and their editorials differ little at this point from those composed by the highly paid staff of the NY Times... there's an idea for Mr. Sulzberger to save some money!
and I receive the L.A. Weekly and the Village Voice newsletters, too.
Painless as the receipt of all this information may be, ploughing through it, giving it some thought, letting it sink in... selecting from it depends also on my mood...
I do not, ordinarily, provide links to anything in the New York Times, for reason that it is a kind of coin, albeit impure and partial and very imperfect, of the realm; one or the other link to the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post and Guardian and Independent will appear, as well as to Slate
http://www.slate.com/
usually to one of Jack 'Jalapeño' Shafer's pieces, though Kaplan, Luthwick and a few other terrific people appear there as well, who have not gone gaga under the lasting influence of the malarial infection known as Michael Kinsley's superciliousness, not that Kinsley has not his occasional anti-dotal uses. [I know I said this before, but I had another metaphor]
The Atlantic. Harpers. Wired. Vanity Fair, The New Yorker... they all have more than nuggets...and some of them are on line.
Foreign Affairs has first rate material by serious people who are serious about the US Imperialism, as compared to the current clowns!
It is a rich world of political journalism for the few million too few.
Marc Cooper's piece on the Mexican/ American Border in the April issue of the Atlantic is a standout, Bernstein's piece in Vanity Fair got far too little play, best as I can tell, perhaps people don't expect anything from something with delectable girls on the cover and some gossip.
Seattle does not hold its own, it's at the bottom of the heap, just one cut [one game in the losing column] above Kansas as in the baseball standings, or Portland, O-gone in the basket ball league. It has always been like that is what people say, and it was too if you look at what it was like during the hot times in the late 60s and 70s. Summer always arrives late, the noggins never really dry out, moss grows not only on the north facing roofs of the houses. The most muscular dystrophy prone major city in the US also suffers from dystrophy of the mind, it is the lack of sunlight, of nearly any kind of light for up to six or seven months that is to blame, and the body's inability to produce it's own vitamin D. And the fact that the great majority of the profoundly provincial inhabitant of the area derive from the northern European reaches.
However, there was a time that the North West had the Wobblies... but those times ... long gone. Sanitized and with fat slugs slowly and innocently [no protective shells] oozing inside the northwestern minds... I delight when I hear a transplanted Brooklyn accent among the wonderful bus drivers.
I don't come up with many links to Time Magazine, Newsweek, or ABC or any of the networks that put their stuff into the sky, into your genes and onto the web simultaneously... Yahoo has a sharp news service but it seems entirely linked to AP... AP is great, except so few of its stories actually then make it into the papers... there might be a story in that for Uncle Jack. AP produces "just the facts, Ma'm" type pieces... but that is not what the populace seems to want to consume. Raw news, oh me Gawd!
I receive my weekly dose of the Weekly Standard... and though most of its attempts to defend Bush + Co. are entirely pathetic at this point, now and then there is a sound piece of one kind or the other; it has some clever whores writing for it, and some astounding fantatic such as Schwartz.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/
and sometimes I will pass something on from there and from
http://www.opinionjournal.com/
the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, whose nationalism and perversity for the rich often reminds me of Der Stuermer and many another fascist organ and which can get my juices flowing if the early Robin hasn't... different juices of course...
Only rarely have time to check the political blogs!
Each morning I visit Le Monde http://www.lemonde.fr/
for oysters and a glass of dry white wine...
and each afternoon
http://www.spiegel.de/schlagzeilen/
chiefly for the feulliton summary and links, although that also arrives as a newsletter from Perlentaucher, which as Sight and Sound provides a summary of the most exportable pieces in English.
However, it's a great age for journalism just below the layer that is most visible to the mass of sparrows, that feeds the main slow brain. And so there is a lot of low level rumbling, whether it will produce the necessary quake? It is to be doubted, too many people have followed the Crawford Kid's advice and just go shopping. And who knows what Carl Rove will have in store for the kiddies come Kingdome come!
Here now what interested me these past seven days or so:

of you may have heard or seen, the BuzzFlash Interview with the Man Who Put the Washington Press Corps to Shame: Ray McGovern. "Why did you lie to get us into a war that was not necessary, that has caused these kinds of casualties? Why?" -- Ray McGovern, Questioning Donald Rumsfeld, May 4, 2006, Atlanta. McGovern was in the CIA for some 27 years,
and a few years ago, at around "Chuck and Ah" time I sent him an e-mail and he called me from Washington, and it turned out that he didn't know that if you spoke up as he did just now to Rumsfeld before an assembled crowd of super millionaires in Atlanta, that speaking up like that in Hitler's Germany meant that you were committing suicide in public, as of 1934 it did. Ray was only bodily removed after telling Rumsfeld what a total liar he was, to his face, and in front of a lot of witnesses, the latter is what counts. What puzzles me is that after 27 years as a "The Company" man Ray still thinks that the briefly super-powerful will tell the truth...
I know a fair number of matters quite confidently. Handke, I think I could tell one of his hairs if I came across it. Psychoanalysis. I also acquired a fair knowledge or the resistance to Hitler. What struck me about that was that the most clearheaded turned out to be those whose ethical motivation was also religiously based. The Swiss seminarian Maurice Bavaud, the German Counter Intelligence Officer Kurt Grosskurt, to mention only two. McGovern is within that line of the current resistance, and harks back to some fine people who opposed the Vietnam venture during the 60s and 70s,
Dictators come in many stripes, so do gangster, as Bert Brecht knew only too well.

NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls
Updated 5/11/2006 10:38 AM ET
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY
The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

As Bush's popularity sinks to new lows--a boost from Hillary Clinton
The poll follows a similar survey done by USA Today/Gallup the day before that also recorded a 31 percent approval rating for the US president. Like the Times /CBS poll, it indicated a sharp drop in support among those considered by the administration to be its base, with little more than half of conservatives giving Bush a positive rating.
It was under these bleak conditions for the White House that the Democratic senator from New York, Hillary Clinton, came forward to praise Bush at a public appearance in Washington. In a speech at the National Archives on her political career, Mrs. Clinton said of Bush: "He is someone who has a lot of charm and charisma, and I think in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, I was very grateful to him for his support for New York."
While asserting that she had "many disagreements about many, many issues" with the Republican president, she added, "He's been very willing to talk. He's been affable. He's been good company."
Returning to the issue of Bush's response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City, Clinton claimed that Bush had kept his promise to provide New York City with $20 billion in aid. "He always kept it on track," she said. "He made sure we got the resources that we needed, and I'm very grateful to him for that."
It is not likely that "charm and charisma," "affable" and "good company" are the words that come to mind for the two thirds of Americans who are opposed to the Bush administration's policies, many of whom loathe the US president for the criminal actions he has taken over the past five years.
What precisely Mrs. Clinton finds charming, affable and good about the American president she failed to say.
A fairly acute description of the president's personal traits was provided not long ago by a prominent Washington psychoanalyst who diagnosed George W. Bush as a "paranoid megalomaniac." In his book Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President , Dr. Justin Frank identified in Bush a "lifelong streak of sadism, ranging form childhood pranks (using firecrackers to explode frogs) to insulting journalists, gloating over state executions...[and] pumping his fist gleefully before the bombing of Baghdad."
White House aides have described his behavior as arrogant and abusive, characterized by sanctimonious invocations of his personal relationship with Jesus Christ combined with obscenity-laced invectives against subordinates.
These personal traits are subordinate, but clearly not unconnected, to Bush's policies of aggressive war, torture, domestic spying and the unprecedented transfer of social wealth from the country's working class majority to the multi-millionaires and billionaires that make up its financial elite.
The fact that Mrs. Clinton can describe such an individual as "good company" and "charismatic" speaks volumes about her own personal makeup, and even more about her politics.
Defending Bush on 9/11
As for crediting Bush with playing some exemplary role in relation to the 9/11 attacks, Senator Clinton's views bear little relationship to reality, and even less to the feelings of many New Yorkers. For millions, the questions start with why the Bush administration failed to stop the attacks, which were then used as the pretext for launching a long-planned war against Iraq and conducting sweeping attacks on democratic rights at home.

Iraq at the mercy of 'kingmaker' MuqtadaBy Sami Moubayed DAMASCUS - A short while ago, I met an Iraqi friend in Europe and greeted him with the traditional question in Arabic: " Kifak?" ("How are you?") With a weary smile he replied, "To tell you the truth, I don't really know anymore." I was taken by surprise at his response because in the Arab world, one does not really expect an answer to kifak?, which is a simple greeting that parallels "good day" in Western culture. He went on to say, "I do not think any Iraqi has an answer to this question today." The reasons, he explained, were that everybody around him in Iraq was complaining, "There is no electricity, no security, no jobs, no clean drinking water, no state, no government, no services."

A parallel universe
Paul Rogers
http://www.opendemocracy.net/conflict/parallel_universe_3529.jsp
As the Iraq war becomes increasingly unpopular within the United States and President George W Bush records exceptionally low approval ratings, the administration needs to redouble its efforts to present the situation in Iraq as one of steady improvement. It can point to the fact that a new prime minister has at last been agreed , while the Pentagon holds back on replacing several thousand troops due to return home from Iraq. The political and media line follows: the trend of events in Iraq is positive, and this will allow plenty of troop withdrawals by the time of the congressional mid-term elections on 7 November 2006.

list of origins of most materials

Apr. 1500 addresses receive this summary on a weekly basis, approximately 100 addresses receive the sometimes daily sendings, with or without comments, which summary is then posted at http://summapolitico.blogspot.comon whenever I find the time.
Do not hesitate, if you wish to be off the list; forward if you like.
I am having some difficulty in making the various links "live" on the blog, so I could send the "summa" with all its links, but the guardian dogs start to bark at the firewalls at a profusion of htlm tags and links. and I receive the L.A. Weekly and the Village Voice newsletters, too.
Painless as the receipt of all this information may be, ploughing through it, giving it some thought, letting it sink in... selection from it depends also on my mood...
I do not, ordinarily, provide links, to anything in the New York Times, for reason that it is a kind of coin, albeit impure and partial and very imperfect, of the realm; one or the other link to the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post and Guardian and Independent will appear, as well as to Slate [usually to one of Jack 'Jalapeño' Shafer's pieces, though Kaplan, Luthwick and a few other terrific people appear there as well, who have not gone gaga under the lasting influence of the malarial infection known as Michael Kinsley's superciliousness, not that Kinsley has not his occasional anti-dotal uses. The Atlantic. Harpers. Wired. Vanity Fair, The New Yorker... they all have more than nuggets... it is a rich world of political journalism for the few million too few. Marc Cooper's piece on the Mexican/ American Border in the April issue is a standout.
Seattle does not hold its own, it's at the bottom of the heap, just one cut above Kansas as in the baseball standings, or Portland, O-gone in the basket ball league. It has always been like that is what people say, and if you look at what it was like during the hot times in the late 60s and 70s that is true. Summer always arrives late. However, there was a time that the North West had the Wobblies... but those times ... long gone. Sanitized and with fat slugs slowly and innocently [no protective shells] oozing inside the northwestern minds...
I don't come up with many links to Time Magazine, Newsweek, or ABC or any of the networks that put their stuff into the sky and onto the web simultaneously... Yahoo has a sharp news service but it seems entirely linked to AP... AP is great, except so few of its stories actually then make it into the papers... there might be a story in that for Uncle Jack.
I receive the Weekly Standard on a Weekly basis
http://www.weeklystandard.com/
and sometimes I will pass something on from there and from
http://www.opinionjournal.com/ [the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, whose nationalism and perversity for the rich often reminds me of Der Stuermer and many another fascist organ]
Only rarely have time to check the political
blogs myself!
