HOT TAIL OF THE DOGDAYS

http://summapolitico.blogspot.com

This is the warm, fading tail of the "perro calientes"... which - is what I asked for when I came on signs advertising "hot dogs" in Mexico; a simpleminded joke that never failed to draw a smile... and lead to pleasant palabres... where I live, coyotes wake me nearly every nite, chiming in, hysterically, with the occasional fire engine siren...

1-a] Sy Hersh

http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/060821fa_fact

alerts us that the hell's-a-poppin' war had been a well planned response to monthly provocations. So why now? Sy has the answer.

The amazingly misnamed Marc Reuel Gerecht [Right/just/ all the Reuel is missing a G and it would mean = Gruesome!] How utterly perfect the Orwellianism of it all...

http://thinkprogress.org/2006/08/20/gerecht-iran/

a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute [where else!] and a member of a small group of analysts who were asked to discuss their views on the Middle East with President Bush at a private lunch this week, said on ABC's This Week that the mid- to long-term fallout from Israel-Hezbollah conflict could be a good thing because it may prompt Bush to take military action against Iran. "Thatta, Boy, Greuel!" A major Raytheon investor no doubt. "By the rockets bright light..." or however it goes.

What I particularly liked during the episode were those accounts in the NY Times about bigger rockets, cluster bombs being rushed to Israel when the plan did not go according to plan. All this is meant as a test run how to bunker bust Iran.

1-b] The Bush administration is having a law passed to insure it against any future prosecution for war crimes... it's good to know that in that respect Cheney & Co. is exercising foresight... also against Judgment Day? in which these folks claim to believe? After all, it is most unlikely that anyone will haul them off to de Haag.

So let us remember, once again, the dismemberment of the Democratic Mossadegh Government of Iran by Eisenhower/Dulles, Kermit Roosevelt in 1953; and the way that that cookie has crumbled... all the way from the installation of Henry Kissinger's good friend, Shah Pahvlevi, a criminal who squandered his country's wealth on F-16s; and thence the variety of Ayatollahs up to and including the current possibly true madman, at least if I can lend credence to these second and third hand possibly entirely propagandistic accounts that I have read; or misunderstand his rhetoric, which may be more for home than foreign consumption as is the US Government's. Thus the U.S. creates an unending series of enemies for its Arms Industry and Evil Hunters...

From cookie to cookie from dust to dust we end in Fukuyamas dustbin of history with sanctimonious Jimmy Carter, Sigismund Brzezinski and thousands upon thousands of dead Afghans and Mujaheddin who of course are mourned in New York as profoundly as are the millions of victims of the consequences of those crimes against humanity committed "in the interest of national security" ever since the 1950 and particularly in the late 7os and early 80s and the millions in Central America, South East Asia and Africa that U.S. National Interest policies have made so dreadfully unhappy.

Professor Fukuyama, so I just read, is a true fiscal conservative; he feels that the cost of the Iraq Conquest and its Afterbirth stands in no sound relation to the result, that it's sort of like going shopping for a Cadillac but ending up with a yardero, a beater. "That's the way to look at things!" Fuki," I always say. And the American people continue to feel good about themselves, that seems to be all that counts, and to continue to shop.

Otherwise, I expect that the apparent surplus of short and medium range rockets in Syria and Persia will smuggle its way across the Shat-al-Arab to Bug Dud and might just be raining there soon on what part of it I leave to your imagination. Most certainly it will if Iran is bunker-busted.

The excellent Michael Schwartz, who has seen nothing but black in Iraq since day one, has a particularly fine low-down on that vile bitch of a "dawg" [as in Secretary Baker's "we do/ don't have a dawg there"] named Iraquistine:

http://www.tomdispatch.com/index.mhtml?emx=x&pid=114108

It is a dawg that will not leave that cannot be dragged away, that is stuck there for good, and that is beginning to look a lot like the dawg that some coyotes chewed up, gnawed face and all, bloody entrails in the dust... and so all this posturing about whether to depart or not, by demorats and pooplikins... it is just that: cowardly immoral, pick your adjective; both parties are far too heavily invested in the military industrial complex, and in who will enjoy its benefits the mostest; that is in power, greed. Of course you can always put even more of the dawg at risk... There used to be countries that took people who commit war crimes such as the invasion Iraq and then even botched the job, and tore off their epaulets and put them up against a wall... or didn't even bother to tear off the epaulets...

But also see this from Al Jazeera on the Tribal Sheiks

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/D1A7CA75-7E85-4B98-8EB5-BBE983872275.htm

One stray thought that keeps cropping up in my brain is whether there was anyone in Washington in 2003 who blanched and said "this is the end" when that coward's showoff war was launched? I am thinking of the head of German Counter Intelligence in 1940, Admiral Canaris, whose service [ The Abwehr] was used to supply the Polish uniforms into which the Wehrmacht stuffed, like so many rabbits, a fair number of Germany's most expendable criminals, to serve as the causus belli... Foresight and a smidgen of real patriotism, for the fathers of the world as a whole, are not such a bad thing... Of course a lot of fine Service officers of all kinds have departed the ship and written their fine books, for all the difference it makes...

There might be another of those mass helicopter departures. But don't be on it, I don't think that the "snarler", five-deferment Cheney would cut and run, he'd probably try to nuke intractable Bug Dud rather then leave in disarray. Oh yes, lots of big walls being constructed there, to impede access from one part of the city to the other! The Berlinification of Bug Dud.

Here are two links, one to Ambassador Khalizad's upbeat assessment of the situation in Bug Dud, the other to clown Norman Podhoretz's defense of the "Bush Doctrine" ['whack em, and whack em again, those evil weeds''], Mr. "Making It" must be angling for a visit to Crawford. Yet, in person.. what a funny guy!

http://www.opinionjournal.com/federation/feature/?id=110008830

http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110008834

Those "innocent" civilians on both sides of the Lebanese/ Israeli border - considering the succor and support they lend the armed forces living amongst them - who is still innocent? Isn't this just a phrase that no one really believes any more.. "innocent civilians".. who constitute the helpless sea, the supports system in which their military swim: Those Israeli girls that sign the bombs and rockets that are about to be delivered to devastate Beirut! Oh how cute? And the equivalent shepherd boy bringing water to Hellsappopin in his bunker? Ah what a part of the world that has brought us three of the worlds great religions!! And isn't the Crawford Kid lucky to have Cheney to attract all the dark matter and still enjoy a third of the country's support! But more than 50 % of the support of the bought and made girls and boys in congress. Oh how irredeemably corrupt!

2] Some of you may have noted that the phrase "Islamo-Fascism" has worked its way all the way from Christopher Hitchens into and out of the Crawford Kid's maw. And an unchewed-through, uncomfortable mouthful of lariats it no doubt is that his speechwriter fed him to spew - to the puzzlement of the majority of the great unwashed one would suppose. If Nazism provided the gold-standard for fascism, and Saddam and his son a kind of Ottoman version, the degeneration of the word in the stridency of the born again neo-con Hitchens signifies its now utter uselessness.

The same goes for the use of the word dictator. Milosevic is regularly referred to - without acknowledging that he won three hard fought election, and when defeated, withdrew, albeit with the kind of reluctance characteristic of an autocrat - as a dictator or "butcher of the Balkans," someone who started four wars and lost each and every one. For reason of opposition to such misappelations, for "the sake of language" is one of about at least half a dozen different reasons I now have seen Peter Handke give for, so famously, attending Milosevic funeral in Pozarevac.

http://www.spectrumpictures.com/spectrum_feature_detail.asp?feature=53

Another reason he gave, to the Croatian Weekly Globus, was to absorb the atmosphere for a planned book on the "tragic figure" that Handke, perhaps correctly, regards Milosevic to be/ to have been. I am nearly done with that little book on Handke, the final part of my attempts – paralleling the three comings of the Handke-Jugo controversy - to digest this episode as part of a much larger project - and all his scandals, in German this time, and you can see it coming online at:

here is the link to the three part interview that was elicited by the same preoccupation of mine and to Lothar Struck's essay on the Heine Prize Skandal:

Teil 3 http://begleitschreiben.twoday.net/stories/2556374/

Those who asked for the PDF of my book will have to wait until the end of the month. The first two parts in English, done toward the late 90s, can be found at the site memorializing the controversy:

http://www.handkeyugo.scriptmania.com

One matter I became aware of, during these perusals, is that with regard to the subjects of Handke, Jelinek and Yugoslavia the degree of political difference between the NYRB - on one end of a certain American spectrum and the Weekly Standard on the other - is as the difference between preferring McCain or General Wesley Clark or G.W. Bush for President: the amusing William Kristol, cousin of Billy?, and Bob Silvers can share drinks and laughs in the Hamptons over that difference, there will be no fisticuffs.

It also occurred to me to wonder - absent democracy as it is practiced in the State of Florida and Justice [!] Scalia - how Al Gore would have responded to 9/11, whether his presidency might have tried to juice itself up by the American impulse to hit someone, preferably far weaker, and what if Al Gore had continued to gain weight as he has without being President but had succumbed to the stress of the task, and we now had as head of state Mr. Liebermann of Connecticut??? Which clown do you prefer??? I think it must be one of the heights of Orwellianism that the person who became President by means of what in short hand is known as "Florida Democracy", then grabbed "democratization" out of his grab bag of excuses to the conquest of Iraq; after all the others had proved to be lies.

The amusing Norman Podhoretz sees the situation as a war for the survival of "Western Civilization" - ah yes, the wonders of Modernism which the Islamic world was too backward to accept subsequent of the British and French betrayal in 1919, and everything that followed. Now some want to be modern at least with respect to armaments... the amazing self-justifying drivel of certain intellectuals. - It all looks like the same ancient horror to me. It's just that one side has the better arms, and doesn't want the opposition to have them.

3] The odd belated admission by Gunter Grass that he had been drafted into the Waffen SS made me think about the degree to which Grass' righteousness, in so many matters, might have been fueled by a sense of shame, for I think Peter Gay

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/20/opinion/20gay.html

is right in thinking that it must have been shame that motivated him withhold an otherwise utterly insignificant occurrence; meanwhile Grass claims as much himself in a letter to the Mayor of Danzig/Gdansk where Leck Walesa was calling for the revocation of Grass' honorary citizenship. So it has been shame that has been eating away at him, that has fueled his creativity... and his embarrassment...

Wolfgang Sofsky in Die Welt

http://www.welt.de/data/2006/08/21/1005612.html

has a more complicated take on the matter, and doesn't think it's shame, but that Grass expected to find approval. The Sofsky piece is in German, but it is so good that I expect that the German Sightandsound translation service of the best in their fuellitons

http://www.signandsight.com/

will bring an English version shortly. Ina Hartweg, in the Frankfurter Rundschau

http://www.fr-aktuell.de/in_und_ausland/kultur_und_medien/feuilleton/?em_cnt=952320&

has yet another very interesting take on the matter. One of her points is that reading Grass is a form of nostalgia: Germans can time travel to the Third Reich and not feel any guilt, you can visit East and West Prussia and forget that they are now Polish!

Not having received the book "Peeling the Onion" I am dependent on reviews, one of which, by Fritz Raddatz, in Die Zeit,

http://www.zeit.de/2006/34/ L-Grass?page=all

confirms my suspicion that Grass chagrin goes far deeper than the sensationalistic trigger, set off by the F.A.Z. against Grass's publisher Steid's wishes, might lead one to project, however righteously or not.
http://www.welt.de/data/2006/08/26/1010693.html?s=2

Grass having been drafted and serving a total of 45 days also proves that by that time the SS had become so unpopular that they had to take recourse to the draft for what was meant as Hitler's own volunteers, H. having good reason to be distrustful of the German Army. The question arises what made Grass inveigh against Kohl and Reagan when they tried to put a piece of the past to rest in Bitburg,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitburg

at whose Kolmershoehe Cemetary 49 Waffen SS soldiers are interred. Reagan defended himself by saying that "I think that there's nothing wrong with visiting that cemetery where those young men are victims of Nazism also, even though they were fighting in the German uniform, drafted into service to carry out the hateful wishes of the Nazis. They were victims, just as surely as the victims in the concentration camps ." One of the few times I agreed with "Old Softee" - there is something to be said for forgiveness of the ignorant and brainwashed. The same applies of course for all those American soldier boys and now soldier girls of imperial wars past and present.

Lots of material about the Grass controversy at the sites of the major German dailies. The Simon Wiesenthtal Center has announced that it launching an investigation of Grass for his 45 days draft service... the once usefully righteous might turn their attention to unfortunate transformations that victims undergo in the course of time.
Victims are not nice people!!

4] And last but not least, the tippy tipsy dirty tipperay tip of a tail that has has been dragging in the summer dust between its legs: Those of you who visit

http://www.aldaily.com/

a collector site for opinions in the arts and politics, etc. which is run by a certain Dennis "The Mutton" Dutton Menace out of a sheep farm down under in New Zealand, under the aegis of the Chronicle of Higher Education

http://chronicle.com/ -

may have noted, as have I over the years, that the information to which it provides access is severely skewed in the direction of what I call "Neoconnitis", a disease I regard as barely lesser than arthritis, premature senility, perendotitis, but very much akin to hoof and mouth. Be that histology as it may, Dennis "The Mutton" Dutton, on his own four rickety legs and unsteady hooves may, for all it matters to me, run his very own adjunct site, for all his sheep's delight, to the Hoover Institute for War, The American Enterprise Institute, The Weekly Standard and the Intelligent Design Institute. However, to do so under the aegis of the Chronicle of Higher Education is to misuse this, by no means Arts and Letter's first auspice - Arts and Letters motto is VERITAS ODIT MORAS [which means - for those with rusty Latin - "sheep fart first."] for propaganda purposes, modestly insidious, pretty obvious, i.e. only a Mutton would go about it like that.

Mr. Dutton, it appears, is that ressentiment drenched conservative academic who has found a home in a shed down under; which no doubt is why whenever he finds a piece that will criticize what he thinks of as the left academic conspiracy he will link to it. Anyone with a mind could find better critiques of the Academic left however monolithic. Are some articles critical of Cuba? Dennis will heap them together like a pile of alfalfa; and fail, ever, to run something by the Council of Hemispheric Affairs

http://www.coha.org

ditto for Freud, ditto for ditto. Not once has he linked to the finest continuous commentary cum links on the state of the nation and its, what? Polity??
http://www.tomdispatch.com/index.mhtml?mm=8&yr=2006

while supplying no end of drivel, the site is mainly drivel, say from the Daily Telegraph, etc, etc. [A Mutton that drivels - definitive case of hoof and mouth says the vet in me.] Are there some issues that a statist might disapprove of when Poodle and Handler are hard pressed? Mutton to the rescue! {"Jim Dandy, to the rescue?" whence that line, Coasters Fans?}

If you feel as I do that the "Mutton", as I think of him, is doing a disservice to the alleged educational, equanimious, ecumenical idea of this offshoot of an educational 513 {c} institution [tax exempt], I suggest you register your complaint with editor@chronicle.com . You will also find Mr. Dutton's e-mail address, and that of the managing editor, Tran Huu Dung at the bottom of the http://www.aldaily.com/ .

FIRST OF ALL HANDKE'S STATEMENT REGARDING HIS VISIT AT THE MILOSEVICS FUNERAL then the rest of the links that I found interesting in the past few weeks.

April 2006 / III

Chances dim for peace in Baghdad
By Nancy A. Youssef

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Baghdad security plan, which some cast as the last chance to avert a civil war, will be thwarted by Iraq's prime minister because he is unwilling to tackle the country's biggest security threat, many residents and politicians fear.
The plan calls for U.S. forces to sweep neighborhoods and help restore services, eventually leaving the capital under Iraqi military and police control. If that happens, U.S. troops could begin to withdraw. If it doesn't, the country's sectarian conflict could spiral out of control and escalate into a regional war between Iraq's Shiite and Sunni Muslim neighbors.
The offensive hasn't produced any major improvements in the capital since it began on June 14, and many Iraqis fear the plan is doomed by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's willingness to attack Sunni insurgents but not the Shiite militias that support his Dawa political party.

"The government has to make a clear decision about dismantling militias," said Saad al-Janabi, a member of the secular Iraqi slate. "Reconciliation will not happen unless the Iraqi army is in charge."
